Buildaburger Conference – 14th June 2013 – Survival Strategies

Something new I’ve learned at this event is that it is a real advantage to be at a conference held by the venue’s own franchise-owning company. The venue is keen to impress and the food is a lot better than your average platter of triangular sandwiches.
Having feasted fully at breakfast, I decided on a lighter lunch than yesterday. It was still pretty substantial with Thai chicken curry, rice and a selection of salads including rocket & calamari, which is a first for me at a conference.
As a worker, it is important to have a strategy, and a zen-like detachment from your surroundings can be a real advantage. This particular conference was quite pleasant with polite delegates and good food, but some are much more challenging, in both social and culinary respects. Hearing phrases such as “taking ownership of the problem” and “be the change you want to see” can be a disheartening experience when delivered by a lizard in human clothing.
If your commitments will allow, a laptop with internet connection is a must, although a selection of reading matter is a good back up. However, visibly reading something unrelated to the conference can be construed as unprofessional. The laptop strategy is my favourite as typing makes you look busy even if you are writing satirical internet posts that bite the very hand that feeds you. Almost literally.
